How we fund carbon capture R&D labs from your orders

A little funding goes a long way.

Shipping has a carbon footprint. That's why we support leading research startups that remove carbon from the air. It's not perfect, but it's better than "tree-planting schemes".

All we need is one or two of these methods to make a significant impact on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Little by little, we provide funding to their R&D efforts.

    Together, these businesses have…

    • Removed thousands of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere
    • Provided carbon-neutral shipping for millions of orders

    Here's how it works:

    • For every order we receive, a formula is used to calculate the estimated shipping emissions.
    • We pay to cover 3x the estimated emissions from your order to these carbon removal companies that have been vetted by a panel of scientists from Carbon Direct.
    • Shopify Planet uses the money to buy carbon credits from the startups and the companies use that money to remove the equivalent amount of CO2 from the atmosphere.
    • The extra funds go toward the further development of carbon removal technologies.

Watch below to meet a few of the amazing researchers removing carbon from the air.

    Heirloom

Heirloom's direct air capture technology enhances the carbon mineralization process. Heirloom's technology speeds up the rate at which naturally occurring minerals capture CO₂ rather than using energy-intensive fans to draw air in.

    Remora

Remora captures CO₂ from semi-truck tailpipes as they drive, with the CO₂ destined for long-term storage.

    Charm

Charm captures CO₂ using plant waste, converts it into a stable, carbon-rich liquid, and safely stores it deep underground—out of reach of wildfires and soil erosion.
