We joined Microbe Talk to discuss how lab coats can quietly reinforce discrimination in science. Our founder, Derek Miller, spoke with host, Clare Baker, about what we learned from over 1,000 scientists, and how their input led to a more inclusive design, including the long-overdue maternity lab coat.
An eye-opening episode for anyone who believes that equity in STEM starts with the details.

Microbe Talk is produced by The Microbiology Society.
We joined the Microbe Moment Podcast to talk about turning everyday lab frustrations into thoughtful, inclusive design.
Our founder Derek Miller, shared how feedback from over 1,400 scientists shaped our Lab Coat Project — and how we’re reimagining the lab coat for comfort, function, and fit across all body types.
A great listen if you believe even small tools can make a big impact in STEM.

We were honored to be featured on CBC’s long-running science and physics radio show Quirks & Quarks, where our founder Dr. Derek Miller discussed the surprisingly outdated design of lab coats—and how Genius Lab Gear is fixing that. With insights from over 1,000 scientists, we’re working on a modern redesign that puts fit, function, and safety first.

We were excited to be featured on the world-renowned BBC World Service's Science in Action podcast, where our founder Derek Miller spoke with long-time host Roland Pease about the challenges of lab coat design and the revolutionary changes he’s bringing to lab apparel. Derek shared how Genius Lab Gear is crowdsourcing feedback from scientists to create lab coats that are not only functional but designed to fit a wide variety of body types, addressing issues that have been overlooked for decades.

C&EN’s “Fashionable scientists and the science of sustainable fashion” features the early roots of our Lab Coat Project—tracing how one ill-fitting hand-me-down sparked a years-long mission to redesign the lab coat from the ground up. The article captures our crowdsourced approach and highlights why better lab coat design isn’t just about pockets and fit—it’s about belonging in science.
Showing up in Chemical & Engineering News is a big win for our lab coats, because it shows the problem is expansive into the chemical industry, manufacturing, and chemical engineering - not just in academic research.

Our Lab Coat Project got a major spotlight in The Telegraph UK! The article highlights how the classic “unisex” lab coat design doesn’t actually work for most women in science—96% of the women we surveyed said the fit just isn’t right. Too boxy at the shoulders, too long, too tight in the wrong places. We’re working on a fix.
We're thrilled to see the conversation growing. Scientists deserve better gear—starting with lab coats that scientists and engineers actually want to wear.

We were thrilled to see the results of our lab coat survey featured in Chemistry World! The article titled “9 out of 10 scientists hate their lab coat” highlights what over 1,000 chemists and life scientists shared with us: bad fit, not enough pockets, and sleeves that knock over glassware. The feature gave us a huge boost in spreading awareness of the project and why better lab gear matters ahead of The Lab Coat Project pre-order. This shows how our lab coats can address specific issues in organic & inorganic chemistry labs, especially by getting safer lab coats to students taking their first college chemistry lab class.

Our founder, Dr. Derek Miller, was recently featured on the Science Pawdcast with Jason Zackowski to share the story behind some of the company’s most-loved innovations. He discussed the origin of the Pocket Scientist tools—clever, credit-card-sized references packed with essential equations—and how they’ve become go-to tools for students and professionals alike. Dr. Miller also spoke about the Lab Coat Project, a community-driven redesign of the lab coat shaped by input from over 1,000 scientists to improve comfort, function, and safety in the lab.

The Pocket Chemist just got a full review and endorsement from The Chronicle Flask chemistry blog! From the author, Dr. Kat Day:
"I have to say, I genuinely love the Pocket Chemist. What a great idea. It’s well-made and the perfect size to fit into your wallet, pocket or pencil case. It’s the perfect piece of kit to take to lessons or lectures (no sneaking it into exams, though!)."
We are ecstatic to have The Pocket Chemist featured in C&EN's 2019 Holiday Gift Guide for Chemists! This is a huge endorsement of our best-selling tool and has helped us get this gadget in front of many more professors and chemistry teachers.
We were excited to have our founding scientist Derek Miller featured in the monthly Spotlight series by Science & Lifestyle blogger (and professor) Melanie from The Leveraged PhD!
The Professor is engaging STEM professionals to learn about alternate career paths and lifestyles outside of academia. See the Spotlight feature here to learn about the inspiration for and beginnings of Genius Lab Gear.
