September Resource: Have you hosted a Lab Olympics?

To celebrate the Olympics and do some team-building to kick off the academic year, labs around the world are hosting their own versions of a “Lab Olympics”. The basic concept is to create events out of mundane tasks common in your field of research, either timed or for accuracy. Just make sure to keep it safe and avoid being wasteful of supplies. To get you started, I’ve collected my favorite ideas from Reddit below:

  • Pipette Tip Basketball: Participants must accurately eject pipette tips into progressively smaller containers, testing both skill and precision.
  • Dry Weighing Accuracy: Without a scale, contestants must estimate 1 gram of a commonly used powder, scored for accuracy
  • PPE Relay: Teams put on and take off full Personal Protective Equipment as quickly as possible, in a relay format
  • Unscrewing Falcon Tubes: A timed trial to unscrew 20 Falcon tubes one-handed
  • Parafilm Stretching: Contestants stretch a pre-measured section of Parafilm, judged on length or surface area without breaking
  • Pipette Tip Box Reloading: Timed event for refilling a pipette tip box

Here are 3 Reddit threads with more ideas and commentary! Thread 1 - Thread 2 - Thread 3

September behind-the-scenes news:

Lab coat inventory dwindling

Our lab coats take a long time to make. Longer than most. Our custom fabric takes 2 months alone, the construction takes another 2 months and then we have to find a boat to get it here. So although we started a new run in April, it won’t be here until the end of October (at best). Several sizes are out of stock already and the best we can do is wait and prepare. Thanks again for your support!
