October Resource: Get the lab newbies up to speed on safety, fast

This is the most dangerous time of year in the lab! You’ve got new students, new interns, new hires all starting new experiments with new chemicals and equipment. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources to make this transition safely. The Lab Safety Institute has been collecting and compiling best practices and data around lab accidents since 1978.

For starters, they have over a dozen free printable safety posters covering eye protection types, gloves, fume hood best practices, and more.

They also offer online live courses several times per month. I’m including the upcoming list below. They aren’t free, but neither is a hospital visit or worker’s comp claim. The courses have some scholarship opportunities and can count toward CEU’s for teachers. If you feel at all uncertain about the safety in your lab or work, these resources are here for you!

      Just for fun: Science Cartoon

For science funding, anything is on the table right now.

      Maternity lab coat coming soon!!

Our next batch of lab coats is arriving the first week of November, and included is a very special new launch. We’re releasing a maternity lab coat, which otherwise does not exist. This came up in our original survey and I was astonished when I couldn’t find any available online. The hard part is, we need to sell at least 300 of these per year to break even on storage costs. So, we will need your help to spread the word so expecting parents know it’s an option.

If you know anyone expecting soon, please share this page with them!
