January Resource: A free dictation tool that is actually easy to use

Since writing my thesis, I’ve been on a journey trying to find a voice dictation tool that would actually save me time. I kept finding that the output would be riddled with so many mistakes, it just wasn’t faster after making so many small edits. The built-in Windows 11 tool was serviceable for instant messaging but still lacked the polish for professional emails or writing papers.

But last month I found Wispr Flow.

It’s smart enough to format emails, add punctuation, fix stutters, and capitalize proper nouns. The “button” is a tiny hover overlay that never gets in the way, and you can trigger it with a Ctrl+Options key combo. It automatically pauses music while you speak and waits until you release the button to decide how to format everything.

The best part is, it’s free! Well, up to 2000 words a week. That’s enough for me sending messages and occasional emails. If you’re a journalist, you might need the Pro plan (which is still cheaper than Netflix).

If you think that would be useful, use my personal referral code to get a month of the Pro free trial and once you hit 2000 words I’ll also get a free month of Pro. I hope it helps!

Behind the scenes at Genius Lab Gear:

Please welcome our new social media manager!

Social media has always been a struggle for me to keep up with. The product development and logistics is already a full-time job. So when I first met Melanie (@MellyTheScienceGeek on IG) during a collaboration, I thought, “Wow, she would be great at running our social media.” A few months later I reached out again and she was ready to dive in! Melanie will be critical in helping us grow while letting me focus more on the product development. Anything you want to see from us on socials? Reply here and let me know!
